How Long Should You Meditate?

If you're new to meditation it can be tricky to know how long to do it for and which type to choose so we've broken it down for you - read on to find out more...

In the past decade meditation has become increasingly popular. But for the average person, it can be difficult to juggle daily life and find time for meditation or yoga. With this in mind, let’s take a look at how long you should be meditating everyday, and yes, it can be as little as five minutes!

Should you meditate for 5 or 10 minutes?

There's no right or wrong answer, it's just that the benefits of 10 minutes of meditation are greater than the benefits of five, so if you can fit an extra five minutes more in your schedule, go ahead! And see the difference for yourself.

If 10 minutes doesn’t work for you right now, five minutes is better than not meditating at all. You'll feel calmer and more relaxed afterwards, which means that even short bursts give your brain time to rest and recharge.

Meditating for 10 minutes

10 minutes is the perfect amount of time to start with. It’s long enough to get into a flow state and feel the benefits of meditation, but not too long that you lose interest. 10 minutes can easily be fitted into your day. Try taking ten minutes before work or school, or as soon as you wake up in the morning.

Meditating for 15 minutes

The University of California found that a single 15 minute session of mindful meditation can help you be happier and less stressed throughout the day.

Meditation isn't something that should be feared or avoided; it's simply an act of practicing mindfulness every day for 15 minutes at a time. You'll find that as your practice grows deeper and more regular, you'll be able to meditate for longer than 15 minutes per session (maybe even a whole hour!).

Meditating for 20 minutes

I have found that 20 minutes of meditation every day is a good number for me. I tend to do two 10-minute sessions per day: one in the morning and another one before bedtime. However, if I am feeling stressed out or anxious about something, I might add an extra five minutes at the end of my first session so that I can really before going out into the world again. Plus, when you get into the flow, 20 minutes feels like nothing at all!

So, how long should you meditate every day?

The best time to meditate is the time that feels good for you. If you have trouble getting yourself to sit down and meditate, then try starting with just five minutes a day. Do this for two weeks and see how it feels. If you've gotten into the habit by then, then increase your meditation time by five minutes every other week until you reach a length of 15 minutes per day.

If after several months or even years of daily practice you still want more, then go for it! You can meditate for as long as you want each day (and we'd love for all the women in our community to be able to do so). It's best however if you aim for at least 15 minutes a day though since there are many benefits from doing so!

Overall, the amount of time you meditate is up to you and how your day is. Some days may be five minutes, where others you might have 20! There’s no right or wrong answer for how long you should meditate, you’ll feel the benefits either way. There are so many different ways to practice mindfulness and if you find one that resonates with your lifestyle then keep doing it as often as possible!
