Telling yourself how amazing you are can feel incredibly awkward and silly.

And, if you’re anything like me, you go through what I like to call, “confidence episodes" - one week you feel unstoppable, then a week later you’re in the mirror nitpicking everything about your appearance. It’s not a fun cycle.

But there are ways we can give ourselves a helping hand and get on track to knowing we are worthy. In this blog post, I'll be exploring the topic of self-esteem and sharing simple things you can do to boost it.

The Self-Esteem Spectrum

Not to be confused with self-love or self-worth, self-esteem comes from a focus on the external - your belief that you can achieve in the world.

If you have low self-esteem you are assigning a low-value score to yourself. When you place little value on your existence, you have a harder time using your voice, and expressing your needs, and usually have a fear of failure.

On the other hand, some people mask their low self-esteem by exuding confidence. So there are two very different ends to this spectrum. Where's the ideal place to sit?

Right in the middle.

Somewhere between being shy and afraid; and being obnoxious and conceited, lies a healthy spot. This spot is for the individuals who have firm self-worth, they accept their failures gracefully and welcome their success. They aren’t afraid to express and stand up for themselves and are able to say no.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Why is Having Healthy Self-Esteem Important?

Inevitably, the value that you see in yourself is the value others will place on you. If you show people that you have low self-esteem by acting timid or insecure, that's how they will see you. However, if you believe in yourself, and project confidence, others will treat you accordingly.

That’s why doing internal work on yourself and your mindset is SUPER important.

Self-esteem is prevalent in almost all of our daily encounters. We are always seeing, interpreting, and perceiving. You can usually spot the signs of someone that has low-self esteem within the first 5 minutes of meeting them. Your belief in yourself impacts your subconscious decisions without you even realizing it. It’s crazy how much our self-esteem impacts the way we walk, dress, where we look when people are talking to us, and even what we do with our hands.

Since your self-esteem is noticeable AND important to your success, it’s important that you work on developing self-love.

Getting There

In order to have high self-esteem, you have to work on your self-love. These two terms often get confused as they’re very similar but focus on different areas - external and internal.

Self-love is an internal appreciation of your true self, as you are right now. Whereas, self-esteem is confidence in one’s ability to achieve (external).

When we work on one, it positively affects the other.
